Last Post

It has been some time since I have posted a blog entry. Just now, I have released the post, that has been sitting in my draft folder since mid of September.

Meanwhile I have returned to Switzerland (by the end of September) and am back at work.

As these posts are quite time consuming to write in the way I did so far, I will stop posting as of now.

It was a pleasure sharing my experiences with you and who knows, perhaps there will be another chance to do so in the future.

Day 15

After last night I had hoped that my body had slowly adjusted to sleeping on trail. But this night was as most nights, light und disrupted. Also, my morning routine is still the same. I wake up at around 6:30 a.m. and it’s 8:30 a.m. when I start hiking.

Today has a couple of ups and downs in store but nothing major. It is pretty amazing how much the trail has changed since I have crossed the border to Oregon. I have the feeling that the slopes are less steep, the trail is a bit wider, better maintained and more even/level.

Around noon, I take a break in the shade at a spring and talk with other hikers. After 45 minutes, I continue hiking the little uphill section.

Day 13 & 14

As per usual my sleep was average at best. Most of my fellow hikers already left by 6:20 a.m. when I slowly start to crawl out of my tent. And again it’s 8 a.m. by the time I start hiking.

In average today’s segment is more or less all uphill (3500ft / 1060m) over 14.6 miles / 23.5km. The ascend starts right after last night’s camp.

Uphill is still a challenge, especially when it’s really steep, but with very small steps I can conquer them all… 😀

Seiad Valley & Day 12

My night wasn’t great for several reasons. First there was a cat, that tried very consistently to convince it’s owner to open the door to their RV. But the owner didn’t listen and the cat didn’t stop meowing. Then there were air conditioning units switching on and off, traffic going by and (of course) snoring fellow hikers. All in all a night much louder then on trail

As I decided to not go back on trail, I sleep in until 8:30h. By the time I leave my tent most of the hikers are gone. Still ab bit sleepy I go the the restaurant for breakfast, which was very delicious.

After breakfast I make some calls home. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi gets worse the more hikers find their way to the campground.

Because my ankle didn’t improve yesterday, I had decided to stay in town today, to give my feet some time to rest. After my calls I get some Epsom salt from the camp hosts and a bucked and I soak my right foot in it.

Day 10 & 11

As per usual my sleep wasn’t too good but wasn’t too bad either. After having packed up everything and had a breakfast with warm tea I was on trail at around 8:15h and also as per usual the last one leaving the site.

The landscape only changes slowly once I hit the trail. There are a few burn areas but they are only small in size and are followed by healthy trees which provide nice shadows.

On one mountain slope I meet two biologists and I chat with them a bit. They are tasked with identifying moss in this area. When they see moss, they pick it up, look at it /identify it through a magnifying glass and but it back. I ask them how many mosses there are in this area and I am blown away by their answer. They tell me that they already identified around 160 different species but from experience they expect to find around 350 😲 That’s way more then I would have guessed.

Day 8 & 9

Today I woke up at round 6 a.m. but I managed to stay in bed until 8 a.m. I took a shower (who knows when there might be the next one available, right?) and had breakfast with my hosts Wendy and Andre as well as Jeanette. The next topic on my agenda was packing my backpack again.

It somehow felt strange to pack everything because the perks of civilization can be really tempting to not go back on trail. Overall my backpack was a bit lighter compared to when I arrived at Etna due to the bounce box I had sent away yesterday.

At 10 a.m. Andre was so kind to drive me up to Etna Summit. After a short good bye I was on my own again and back on trail. Thanks again to Wendy and Andre for being so wonderful hosts.

It was as steep as it looks like it

Overall nothing special happened today. It was a first steeper segment to start with and then there were a couple of „Pointless Up and Downs“ as well as a burn area.

Day 7 & Etna

My sleep is as all nights on the trail until now. Light and interrupted. When I look out of my tent at 5:45 a.m. I realize that one more tent and mine are the only ones around. The other hikers must really have left at 5:30 a.m. I didn’t feel like starting the day so I turned around and after a short breakfast without a hot tea (to safe some time), I was on trail at 7:40 a.m.

Again it has been a good idea to listen to my body the day before and stop at that tent site. The first few miles to Paynes Lake, where I wanted to set up camp initially, were quite nasty. A lot of downed tree over the trail, elevation gain, burn area and sometimes a lot of stones on trail. Or a combination of the above just to make things really interesting.

Can you see the trail?

After more ups and a few downs of mountains I finally arrived at the parking lot which was the end of my first trail segment. I was happy to have made it. There were 2 other hikers with me, who wanted to hitch a ride to Etna. The first car that arrived was heading in the wrong direction but they stopped and offered us a cold beverages which I couldn’t refuse.

Day 5-6

Except for the usual topics (sound of my sleeping pad, etc…) my night is quiet ok. I wake up with the sunrise but it is so cosy under my quilt that I stay in my tent until 6h. I make breakfast, pack everything up and within no time it is 8:30h when I am back on the trail.

I really enjoyed my last tent site. It was secluded from the trail and I was so far away from other hikers, that I couldn’t hear them at all. It was very nice.

Day 3-4

My first real night on trail wasn’t that great. Because it’s a weekend there are also families camping at the lakes. One of them have a dog that barks all night at every moving grass he sees or sound he hears. At least that’s what it feels like. Also I wake up every time I want to turn around because me moving on my sleeping pad makes a sound that wakes me up. So over all in the morning I am very tired.

At 5:00h there is movement in camp as the first hikers already packed up and start hitting the trail again. I crawl out of my tent and until I had breakfast, packed up as well it is 8:00h.

I am ready to go 🙂

Day 1-2

As mentioned, at around 8:30 a.m. we started our hike. I did a last Covid test that morning in the hotel and it was negative. But I still wasn’t fully recovered. My voice was still a bit rough and my nasal cavities were more or less completely blocked. My lungs were fine, so nothing could have stopped me from hitting the trail that day.

At first we had a short access trail to the PCT of about 0.5 miles but then I was there, turned left and actually started hiking on the PCT. It was a strange feeling. So much planning and preparation had accumulated in that moment and now that it was here. But nothing „happened“. I just started hiking…. But I also hadn’t expected any fireworks or so either 😉

Jeanette had planned to hike 17.2 miles today and to be picked up by an trail angel at the end of the day. I initially had planned to hike only approx. 10 miles to start with. But this trail angel had fuel for us both, so I had a good motivation to get there. If I would have refused that offer, it would have resulted in me only eating cold food for the first week.
